Introduction to Interactive and Multimedia Learning

As a member of the generation that grew up with the mobile Internet boom, I am used to multimedia in my life. However, I still use the traditional way to learn most of the time. So I look forward to learning how to use interactive multimedia to improve the efficiency and quality of learning in this course.

Interactive media

Traditional messaging software can be considered interactive media that allows users to interact with each other using text.

Multimedia

Film can be considered multimedia. It provides motion pictures and sound information to the user while the movie is playing.

Interactive multimedia

Mixed reality can introduce realistic scene information in a virtual environment. Glasses can be used to show users a virtual 3D image positioned in the real environment, or sensors can be used to identify user coordinates for spatial audio.

Mixed reality systems can interact with users by tracking body movement information and voice input.

There is a certain amount of a gray area in interactive media and multimedia. Nowadays, most interactive products are in the form of plural media. There will be products that are classified as both interactive media and interactive multimedia.

Mixed reality is a technology that allows users to interact with virtual and real environments at the same time.
In particular, the global pandemic of the past few years has created a massive demand for remote work and learning. I think the use of virtual reality and mixed reality technologies in remote collaboration will significantly enhance efficiency and ease of communication.

    Hi Flamma,
I really like your examples of the interactive media, multimedia and interactive multimedia. The mixed reality sounds very interesting as a form of interactive multimedia that has the potential to be used in education! I wonder if it is used in education, would it affect online learning in a negative way in some cases because that would require teachers and students to be online at the same time rather than asynchronous. I think being able to arrange your own schedule for online courses is a benefit and mixed reality may break that. What do you think?

      Hi Qiaoyang,
      Thank you for replying.
In my opinion, Mixed reality technology can be used in education in asynchronous and pre-recorded courses to show scenes that cannot be rendered in 2D images.
For example, mixed reality technology in chemistry courses can be used to render a 3D model of Molecular geometry, which can be moved or rotated by the user to aid in observation.
Another example is an urban planning course where a sandbox can be used to create a model of a city and view the design of the simulated city from various angles.

    Hi Flamma,
I agree with your opinion about the film. As for me, film is a effective method to transfer knowledge. I always can learn more knowledge when I am watching films. For example, I started to know the US historia by watch Hollywood films, it is a kind cultural product, so that I can compare with my real life even to apply some of things I learn in the real life. For study, film can be a positive way to relax when I am tired, because it is created based on the current reality, but it is manufactured by the art so that people can see what the film wants to convey to us. It is a good way for learners to gain knowledge as well as relaxing at the same time.
